In this presentation, SEPATON's Jon Mills reviews the definition of data protection lifecycle management, or DPLM. He tracks the birth and creation of data, from its use, application, backup, deduplication and replication, through to archiving - and when required - total erasure. He reviews why storage, data centre and IT managers need to have an intimate understanding of this lifecycle and the various threats, challenges and opportunities presented at different stages. He offers practical advice about how storage and data managers can use DPLM best practices to see, at a glance, where data is within their environment, and report on trends in key areas such as capacity growth, deduplication efficiency, and backup completion times. Beyond this he also considers the opportunities for identifying data protection costs to individual departments, for tiering storage according to data type, and for performing e-discovery and archive searches with ease. All attendees will receive a free copy of SEPATON's booklet, 'The Life of Data'.
